The Lowry assay is an enhanced biuret test involving copper chelation chemistry to assess the amount of protein, any of a group of complex organic compounds containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur consisting of alpha-amino acids joined by peptide linkages, in a specified sample. Following the Folin-Ciocalteu reaction, the reduced Folin reagent is quantitated by spectrophotometry, i.e., based on the ability of the solution to alter the transmission of light at specific wavelengths in the visible spectrum, that is, to alter the transmission of a specific color of light.
